Peran transgender di kursi pemerintahan tak hanya terjadi di Negeri Paman Sam. Maria Khan, seorang transgender asal Pakistan pun menjalani hal serupa. Dia terjun ke dunia politik dan giat melakukan kampanye dari pintu ke pintu di provinsi Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

"Saya ingin berbicara untuk rakyat Pakistan, mewakili mereka dan membantu mengakhiri masalah mereka," katanya kepada Al Jazeera yang dikutip Jumat 20 Juli 2018.

Wanita transgender berusia 38 tahun dari Mansehra, sebuah kota di timur Pakistan yang dikelilingi oleh pegunungan hijau itu tengah berkampanye untuk Pemilu Pakistan 25 Juli lalu. Ia maju sebagai kandidat independen.

Akan ada dua pemilihan, satu untuk dewan legislatif (DPR), lainnya untuk majelis provinsi (DPRD).

Khan adalah satu dari 11 orang transgender di Pakistan yang bertarung memperebutkan kursi majelis provinsi - dua lainnya mengajukan diri untuk kursi DPR. Demikian menurut pengumuman pada Rabu 18 Agustus di sebuah konferensi oleh All Pakistan Transgender Election Network and Election Commission of Pakistan.

Ini adalah tahun pertama mereka menyalonkan diri sebagai kandidat transgender, setelah undang-undang yang menjamin hak mereka disahkan pada Mei lalu.

"Saya melihat diri saya duduk di kursi dewan dalam beberapa minggu ke depan, saya tidak akan berhenti sekarang," kata Khan.

Wanita yang terlahir sebagai Alamgir Khan itu adalah satu-satunya transgender yang mencalonkan diri sebagai salah satu anggota parlemen Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ia akan mengambil satu dari 99 kursi dan melawan tiga orang dari konstituensi PK31 Mansehra. Menurut Komisi Pemilihan, total sebanyak 1.165 kandidat akan bersaing.

Setidaknya sebanyak 500.000 orang mengidentifikasi diri mereka sebagai transgender di Pakistan.

Menurut kelompok advokasi Aliansi TransAction, anggota komunitas transgender hingga kini terus mengalami pelecehan verbal dan fisik, meskipun Undang-undang Transgender Persons (Perlindungan Hak) disahkan pada bulan Mei -- yang menjamin hak seperti warisan dan mencalonkan diri untuk jabatan publik atau berkumpul dan melarang diskriminasi.

Undang-undang itu juga mengizinkan warga Pakistan untuk mengidentifikasi diri sebagai pria, wanita atau campuran dari kedua jenis kelamin, dan untuk memiliki identitas yang terdaftar di dokumen resmi.

Kembali di Mansehra, Khan mengatakan bahwa meskipun diberhentikan dari beberapa perguruan tinggi dan universitas karena jenis kelaminnya, ia terus berusaha untuk melanjutkan pendidikannya.

Kini ia tengah menuju diploma pariwisata dan perhotelan dari Universitas Hazara.

Simbol dalam pemilihannya adalah seekor domba, binatang yang mewakili pengorbanan.

"Kami mengorbankan domba untuk memberi kami makan, saya ingin mengorbankan segala sesuatu yang saya sayangi untuk rakyat saya," katanya.

Saadia Shah, seorang profesor yang berbasis di Mansehra, mendukung tawaran Khan.

"Orang-orang ini (kandidat transgender) harus diberi kesempatan untuk menjalankan kantor-kantor pemerintah, karena mereka menghadapi kesulitan, sehingga mereka akan memahami kami," katanya kepada Al Jazeera. "Tetapi bahkan jika dia menang, aku khawatir dia tidak akan dianggap serius atau dia bisa diserang."

Anees Ahmed, pendukung lainnya, mengatakan: "Dia bekerja sangat keras untuk menang. Ketulusan adalah apa yang diinginkan kebanyakan orang, jadi saya akan memilihnya juga."

Sebagai transgender, Khan mengatakan dia telah ditindas dan ditertawakan dalam perebutan kursi itu, dan mengklaim poster kampanyenya telah dirobek. Namun dia bersikeras untuk memenangkan kompetisi demi mengabdi pada masyarakat.
